Archie Gray to Newcastle
Quiet since 1 July 2026. Last report: Keith Downie. Probability when it went quiet: 4%.
Newcastle have registered an interest in Archie Gray, the 20-year-old midfielder contracted to Tottenham until 2030, but the move is nowhere near done. Fabrizio Romano reported on 1 July that Newcastle sent a formal offer to Spurs, which was rejected outright. Keith Downie, citing sources at both clubs on the same day, pushed back: he says no bid has actually been made, that Gray's name has simply come up in conversation at Newcastle, and that it has gone no further than that. Two credible reporters, one story, two conflicting accounts. The sourcing situation is genuinely awkward. Romano broke what he called an exclusive offer and rejection; Downie, with strong contacts at Newcastle, flatly denied any formal bid exists. Until one version is corroborated by a third voice, readers should hold both accounts with care. This is a story in which the raw facts are still being contested between reliable journalists. Given that contradiction, and the size of the gap between what Newcastle appear willing to pay and what Spurs want, this is a long shot at present. Tottenham's asking price sits around €106m. Newcastle's reported figure is €72m. That is a very wide gap on a player Spurs only signed for €41m a year ago. For this to move forward, Newcastle would need to close a gap of roughly €35m, and Spurs would need a genuine reason to sell a young asset locked in until 2030. Newcastle have shown they will spend serious money on midfielders. A €78m outlay on a Real Sociedad player and €75m on a Stuttgart signing demonstrate the club can and will reach those figures. Gray at €106m would
