Geny Catamo to Sunderland

Quiet since 6 August 2026. Last report: Graeme Bailey. Probability when it went quiet: 10%.

Sunderland have moved for Geny Catamo, the 25-year-old Sporting CP attacker, and the early signal is that the player fancies it. Catamo is contracted at Sporting until June 2028, so nothing here is straightforward, but Sunderland's interest is live rather than idle. Tellingly, Sporting appear to be bracing for his exit: they are closing in on Watford's Nestory Irankunda, the sort of replacement business a selling club lines up. The fee under discussion sits between €26m and €36m, above his roughly €25m valuation. This rests on a single voice for now. Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk is a solid, well-connected reporter, and he frames it firmly: Sunderland have made their move and Catamo is keen. But it is one report, not a chorus. Until other credible names corroborate it, treat the detail as promising rather than nailed down. The balance here is a long shot. A willing player and a club apparently planning for his departure both help, yet the gap between Sporting's expectations and any Sunderland offer is real, and the fee talk stretches to €36m. For this to move, Sunderland need to land inside that range and Sporting need Irankunda secured first. Sunderland have spent freely at this level lately, so the money is not fanciful. They paid €32m to Strasbourg in 2025 and €24m each to Brighton and Roma the same year. A Catamo deal in the €26m to €36m band would fit that pattern comfortably. Watch for two triggers: Sporting completing the Irankunda signing, and a first concrete bid from Sunderland landing near the top of the discussed range.
