Jarell Quansah to Arsenal

This move fell through. Last report: Guardian Sport, 14 August 2026.

Arsenal have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over Jarell Quansah, the 23-year-old England defender, as they weigh their options at the back. The interest is real and the contact fresh, but the shape of any deal is against them. Leverkusen do not want to sell, and Quansah is tied down until June 2030. Leverkusen want at least €50m to even entertain a conversation, while the higher figure being discussed sits around €70m. Quansah himself is described as open to a move if the situation evolves, which is a long way from a player pushing to leave. The sourcing here is about as strong as it gets. David Ornstein, the most trusted voice in this file, has it, alongside Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs. BBC Sport, Sky Sports News and Guardian Sport all carry the story too. Six credible names on the same day is unusually solid, though the wording across all of them stresses interest and initial contact rather than an agreement. This is a long shot for now. For it to move, Leverkusen would have to change their stance and accept a fee north of €50m, and Quansah's own quiet openness would need to harden into intent. As things stand the selling club's determination to keep him is the wall Arsenal cannot get past. For precedent, Arsenal have spent at this level before: Real Sociedad to Arsenal for €70m in 2025, and Chelsea to Arsenal for €75m in 2023. Quansah's own move, Liverpool to Leverkusen, cost €35m in 2025. Watch for Leverkusen softening on €50m, or a rival firming up, most notably Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa, whom Arsenal still rate as an alternative.
