Jean-Philippe Mateta to Aston Villa

Aston Villa have gone in for Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Crystal Palace have said no. An initial bid in the region of €24m was rejected out of hand, with David Ornstein reporting the offer lands far below what Palace would want for a 29-year-old striker they value much higher. Mateta's camp made contact with several clubs, Villa among them, and the striker is said to be keen on a move. Palace are not budging yet. The reporting here is about as strong as it gets. David Ornstein, rated 93 for credibility, broke the bid itself and added the context that Villa's interest is ongoing. Ben Jacobs, at 84, confirmed the rejection and put a figure on it. Graeme Bailey backed up the same story from a separate angle, noting Mateta's camp made the approach. Three well-regarded voices converging on the same day is about as solid as this gets before contracts are involved. Right now this sits as a long shot. Palace have knocked back the opening offer flat, and the gap between what Villa have bid and what Palace want looks wide. For this to happen, Villa likely need to come back with a number much closer to €33m or above, and Palace need to decide they are willing to sell a player they clearly still rate. Mateta wanting out helps Villa's cause, but it will not force Palace's hand alone. Villa have paid big for attacking talent before, handing Sevilla FC €31m for a forward in 2022 and Nice €30m in 2025.
