João Palhinha to Aston Villa

This move fell through. Last report: Ben Jacobs, 15 August 2026.

The move is off, at least for now. Bayern director Max Eberl said it plainly on 14 August: Aston Villa made contact over João Palhinha, but there is no agreement, and the deal is currently off. That followed days of back and forth in which Villa pushed for a loan with an option to buy, only for Bayern to reject the structure outright. Bayern want a permanent sale. Villa, at this stage, only want to loan him. The sourcing here is about as strong as it gets. Fabrizio Romano and Florian Plettenberg both carry serious credibility and both reported the collapse independently, quoting Eberl directly. Ben Jacobs adds detail on Palhinha's own preference for England. This is not a single rumour doing the rounds. It is corroborated across multiple well-regarded voices, all pointing the same way. Given the current impasse, this now sits as a long shot rather than a live deal. Personal terms were reportedly agreed back on 12 August, so Palhinha's willingness is not the problem. The blockage is structural: Villa will not commit to a permanent fee in the €16m to €19m range that Bayern want, and Bayern will not budge on the loan model. Unless Villa change their financial approach, the move stays stuck. Bayern paid €51m for Palhinha when they signed him from Fulham in 2024, and Fulham themselves paid Sporting €25m for him in 2022. Villa's own recent business, such as the €18m deal with Lyon and €17m moves involving Arsenal and Man City, shows they do spend in that bracket, just not, so far, on this particular structure. Watch for any shift in Villa's stance toward a permanent bid, or a cha
