Juan Barinaga to Peñarol

Quiet since 9 July 2026. Last report: Augusto Cesar. Probability when it went quiet: 12%.

Juan Barinaga finds himself out of favour at Boca Juniors, one of the players set aside by manager Arruabarrena, and Peñarol have opened talks to take the 25-year-old right back on loan with an option to buy. The structure is agreed in principle. What is not agreed is the money, both the loan fee and the purchase price are still being worked through by the two clubs. The player himself wants the move, which counts for something, but wanting it and getting it are different things. Two Argentine reporters carry this story and both point the same way. Augusto Cesar, rated at 72 for credibility, broke the detail that Barinaga is among those Arruabarrena has pushed to the margins, and that the loan fee and buy option are the sticking points. German Garcia Grova, at 70, corroborates the shape of the deal independently, right down to the loan-with-option structure. Two separate voices landing on the same story on the same day is a decent base, though neither has offered a figure or a fresh update since. The honest read is against the odds. Talks have been alive for 25 days without a fresh signal, which suggests the numbers are proving stubborn rather than close. Peñarol remain the clear front-runner among suitors, well ahead of an obscure interest from CSIR, but leading a two-horse race is not the same as winning it. Boca signed Barinaga from Belgrano for €3m, and Peñarol have paid similar money before, €3m for Boston River, €1m each for Liverpool FC, CA Ituzaingó and CA Fénix. A loan with a modest option fits that pattern comfortably. Watch for either club moving first on the loa
