Julián Alvarez to FC Barcelona

This move fell through. Last report: Fabrizio Romano, 24 September 2026.

The move is dead, at least for now. Barcelona's interest in Julián Alvarez ran into a wall in late August when Atlético's leadership shut the door publicly and firmly. Talks broke down amid accusations of bad faith on both sides, and by early September Alvarez was being told to focus on rebuilding trust at Atlético rather than plotting an exit. Club president Laporta has since kept the row alive, criticising Atlético's conduct, but there is no sign of fresh negotiation. The strongest sourcing here comes from Fabrizio Romano, who carried direct quotes from Atlético CEO Gil Marín ruling out any sale, and those lines were echoed by the Guardian and corroborated by Spanish reporter German Garcia Grova the same day. The BBC's later piece on Alvarez needing to repair bridges at Atlético confirms the fallout was real and not just posturing. This is well corroborated, not a single flimsy tip. Given a club executive has staked his word publicly that the transfer will never happen, and both sides have traded accusations of dishonesty, the path to a deal now looks a long shot. For this to be revived, Atlético's hierarchy would need a dramatic change of heart, or Alvarez himself would need to force the issue from inside the dressing room. Neither looks close. Barcelona have paid big for attacking talent before, including €148m for a Dortmund signing and €120m for a player bought from Atlético themselves, so the fee range discussed for Alvarez was not out of step with their recent business. The trouble here was never really the money. Watch for any softening in tone from Gil Marín or La
