Nabil Bentaleb to Lyon

Quiet since 21 July 2026. Last report: Marc Mechenoua. Probability when it went quiet: 7%.

Nabil Bentaleb is a free agent this summer, his contract at Lille having run out, and Lyon are said to be weighing him up as an option in midfield. The 31-year-old Algeria international has two roads open to him: stay in the north and sign a new deal with Lille, or head south to Lyon on a free transfer. Nothing has been signed either way, and both paths are still live. The story comes from Marc Mechenoua, whose credibility sits at a solid 75 out of 100. He reports that Lyon are pushing forward on Bentaleb and lays out the two options clearly. It is a single source so far, not yet backed up elsewhere, so this counts as an informed first flag rather than a confirmed pursuit. Call this one against the odds for now. Bentaleb himself has to choose Lyon over staying put at Lille, and there is no indication yet which way he is leaning. A free transfer removes the fee as a sticking point, which helps, but at 31 and out of contract, clubs can afford to take their time, and so can he. Nothing here suggests urgency on either side. Lyon have paid real money for midfield reinforcements before: €6m for a player from Liverpool in 2021, €6m from Venezia, €5m from Dortmund this year, and €5m from Stade Brestois. A free move for Bentaleb would cost them nothing against those benchmarks, making it a low-risk, low-outlay dip into the market if it happens. Watch for Bentaleb's own statement of intent, whether that is a fresh Lille contract being announced or firmer word from Lyon that talks have advanced beyond interest. Until one of those lands, this stays speculative.
