Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to Newcastle United

This move fell through. Last report: Graeme Bailey, 10 August 2026.

Newcastle are exploring a move for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, the 31-year-old Danish midfielder currently under contract at Olympique Marseille until June 2028. Discussions between the clubs have already begun, according to Santi Aouna, and exchanges with the player are advancing. Marseille are asking €12m. Newcastle's interest is being driven by the need for experienced midfield cover after losing Bruno Guimaraes, with sporting director Ross Wilson leading the file. The reporting is solid across multiple credible voices. Craig Hope and Keith Downie, both reliable Newcastle correspondents, confirmed the interest on 7 August. Fabrizio Romano added context by publishing a statement from Højbjerg's agent, Luca Puccinelli, who described his client as "a proud Olympique de Marseille player" focused on his work, stopping short of any hint of departure. Santi Aouna, who has Marseille sources, went furthest, reporting that talks are underway and that the player has already given a signal. That combination of three credible reporters pointing the same way is meaningful. Despite the sourcing, this is against the odds for now. Marseille hold a contract until 2028 and have set €12m as their price. The agent's deliberately non-committal public wording suggests the player has not yet pushed for the exit. For the move to complete, Newcastle would need to meet or very nearly meet that asking price, and Højbjerg himself would need to signal clearly that he wants to go. The fee in question sits comfortably within Newcastle's recent spending pattern at this level. They paid €12m to sign from RSC
