Folarin Balogun to Sunderland

Quiet since 20 July 2026. Last report: Keith Downie. Probability when it went quiet: 2%.

The story linking Folarin Balogun to Sunderland is thin and, as of today, actively contradicted. The 25-year-old American is under contract at Monaco until June 2028, and while he is clearly wanted this summer, the notion that Sunderland are chasing him has been publicly knocked down. A fee in the region of €32m to €44m has been floated for a player valued at around €31m, but there is no sign of terms, talks or momentum on this particular route. The most recent word comes from Keith Downie, a well-regarded voice at 84 out of 100, and it is a flat denial rather than a link. Downie states plainly that Sunderland are not trying to sign Balogun, that the striker is not on their radar, and that the striking position is not currently a priority at the club. The only positive noise sits at a much lower level of reliability, and it is a multi-club link with no substance behind it. This is a long shot. For it to gain any life, Sunderland would have to reverse their stated position on the position itself, and a genuine bid would need to surface. Right now the credible reporting points the other way, so the balance is firmly against. Balogun knows Monaco well, having joined from Arsenal for €31m in 2023. Sunderland have spent freely of late, bringing in players from R. Strasbourg for €32m in 2025 and Brighton for €25m in 2025, so the money would not be out of keeping. The appetite, per the sourcing, is the problem. What would change things: an actual Sunderland bid, or a fresh, credible source overturning Downie's denial.
